Enhancing the Airport Lounge Experience

The competition for premium airport lounge experiences is intensifying, with American Express stepping up its game by elevating the culinary offerings at its Centurion Lounges. These exclusive spaces, available to American Express Platinum cardholders, are now featuring menus crafted by renowned chefs and mixologists, aiming to provide a more enticing experience for travelers.

At Miami International Airport (MIA), one of 15 U.S. locations hosting a Centurion Lounge, guests can look forward to a new menu that highlights the talents of James Beard Award-winning chefs. This initiative, called the Culinary Collective, will debut on July 29 and bring fresh, exciting flavors to the lounges across the country.

Notable Chefs Involved

Several accomplished chefs have been selected to contribute to the new menu. Mike Solomonov, known for his work at Aviv in South Beach and Zahav in Philadelphia, brings Israeli cuisine to the table with dishes like pomegranate glazed salmon topped with tabbouleh and charred broccolini with kashaval cheese and lemon.

Kwame Onwuachi, who has made a name for himself in New York and Washington, D.C., is set to open Las' Lap Miami, a restaurant and rum bar in Miami Beach. His contributions include suya short ribs and a tamarind ice box cake, offering a unique blend of Afro-Caribbean flavors.

Mashama Bailey, celebrated for her modern Southern cuisine, will introduce torched espresso creme brûlée and paprika chicken to the menu. Her restaurants, The Grey in Savannah and L'Arrêt by The Grey in Paris, are known for their innovative takes on traditional Southern fare.

Sarah Grueneberg, from Monteverde, will add vegan lemony orzo with artichokes and dill, as well as a grilled corn and cucumber salad with avocado and cilantro salsa verde. Her Italian-inspired dishes bring a fresh perspective to the lounge menu.

Harrion Ginserberg, the bar director at Overstory, will craft unique cocktails such as a vodka-based drink with yuzu, soda, and lime, along with a non-alcoholic green tea tonic. His creations aim to elevate the drinking experience with a focus on botanicals and local ingredients.

Expanding the Lounge Experience

American Express is not alone in this growing trend. Other airlines and financial institutions are also investing in airport lounges to attract customers. American Airlines recently announced plans to build a new flagship lounge at MIA, while Delta Air Lines upgraded its VIP lounge there in 2024. Avianca and TAP Portugal have also renovated their spaces, showing the increasing importance of these areas in the travel industry.

Financial firms like Capital One and Chase have entered the lounge business, recognizing the value of providing exclusive experiences to their customers. In 2024, the American Express Platinum card was named Best Card for lounge access by The Points Guy, partly due to its access to the Delta Sky Lounge and certain Priority Pass lounges.

Rotating Menus and Exclusive Access

The menus at Centurion Lounges will rotate regularly, with some items available at all 15 U.S. locations. The Culinary Collective's offerings will make up about half of the menu at U.S. Centurion Lounges. This approach ensures that travelers can enjoy a variety of flavors and experiences, tailored to each location.
