A New Approach to Healing After Divorce

Entrepreneur Justin Milrad has recently released a groundbreaking book that offers a fresh perspective on navigating the emotional and practical challenges of divorce. Titled You 2.0: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself After Divorce, the book is more than just a manual—it's a comprehensive resource designed to help individuals transform one of life’s most difficult experiences into an opportunity for personal growth.

Milrad’s own journey through a highly stressful and costly divorce played a significant role in shaping his perspective. He recalls the experience as something that spiraled out of control, leading to an eight-day jury trial that left him exhausted. “In hindsight, my ex and I often talk about how it didn’t have to be this way,” he said. “There were too many external influences that contributed to the situation, and it was never healthy.”

Driven by his passion for mental health and wellness, Milrad has dedicated much of his career to supporting others through similar struggles. As co-founder of The Berman Center, a treatment facility for mental health and substance abuse, and co-founder of The Blue Dove Foundation, an organization focused on mental health education and awareness, he has built a strong foundation in helping people overcome emotional and psychological challenges.

After going through his own divorce, Milrad became a certified divorce coach—a role he describes as a thought partner who guides individuals through the complexities of the process. According to him, a divorce coach helps build a team of professionals to navigate the legal, emotional, and financial aspects of divorce more efficiently. In his experience, it can take people up to five years to emotionally recover from a divorce without such support.

This realization inspired him to write You 2.0, a book that draws from his personal experiences and the stories of his clients. “I believe there’s a better way to do divorce,” he said. The book covers a wide range of topics, including mindset, strategy, co-parenting, personal growth, communication, and the division of assets. It also includes a coordinating workbook with a week-by-week plan of detailed worksheets and exercises for self-reflection, set to be published in August. Both the book and workbook are available online.

For Milrad, the key to a successful divorce lies in self-reflection, honesty, and emotional work. “The most exciting part isn’t the divorce itself—it’s what comes after,” he explained. “You have an opportunity to rebuild your life and start fresh. That’s an exciting place to be.”

Despite the emotional toll of his own divorce, Milrad maintains a positive relationship with his former wife. They are described as “top-notch coparents” to their three children, aged 9, 13, and 15. “We do dinner together sometimes. We celebrate special events. We sit next to each other when we see our kids perform,” he said. “It’s not the divorce that hurts and destroys kids. It’s how you handle the divorce that does.”

Milrad wrote You 2.0 with the goal of providing a roadmap for anyone going through the aftermath of a divorce. Whether it’s the emotional, financial, or psychological challenges, the book serves as a guide for men and women alike. It’s written from the perspective of someone who has been through the process and emerged with greater purpose and clarity.

“I don’t want people to go through the same pain and financial costs that it created for us,” he said. His hope is that this book will offer a new path forward—one that emphasizes healing, growth, and the possibility of starting over with renewed strength and direction.
