President Trump's Claim About Coca-Cola and Real Cane Sugar

President Donald Trump recently made a notable statement on social media, claiming that Coca-Cola has agreed to switch from high-fructose corn syrup to real cane sugar in its U.S. products. He shared the news with his followers, expressing gratitude to the company’s leadership for what he called “a very good move.” The president emphasized that this change would result in a better product for consumers.

However, as of now, Coca-Cola has not officially confirmed this agreement. The company has not issued a public statement regarding any such decision, leaving the situation in a state of uncertainty. If the switch does happen, it could have significant implications for the sugarcane industry in Palm Beach County, Florida.

The Importance of Sugarcane in Florida

Palm Beach County is one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the United States. As of 2025, about 50% of the nation’s cane sugar comes from Florida, with roughly 70% of that production originating from Palm Beach County. The local sugar industry plays a vital role in the region’s economy, employing over 14,000 people and generating an annual income of more than $800 million. The total economic value of the industry exceeds $2 billion.

WPBF 25 News spoke with Rick Roth, a state politician and president of Roth Farms, a family-owned operation based in Belle Glade. Roth Farms has been in business since 1962 and produces a variety of crops, including sugar cane, vegetables, radishes, corn, and rice.

A Stable Industry with Long-Term Potential

Roth expressed optimism about the potential impact of Coca-Cola’s possible shift to real cane sugar. He noted that if there is increased demand for cane sugar in beverages, it could lead to higher sugarcane production in Florida. However, he also acknowledged that meeting this demand would require careful planning.

While sugar has a longer shelf life compared to vegetables, it is less profitable in the short term. Roth explained that sugar can be stored for two to three years without losing quality, making it a more stable crop. This stability helps farmers maintain consistent income even when other agricultural sectors face challenges.

For example, Roth mentioned that this year has been particularly tough for vegetable growers due to low market prices and poor sales. In contrast, sugar provides a more reliable source of income, especially during difficult seasons.

Natural Sugar vs. Artificial Sweeteners

Roth also highlighted the benefits of natural cane sugar over artificial sweeteners and additives. He emphasized that the process of turning raw sugar into a crystallized form involves minimal processing, making it a healthier option. “We don’t do anything to the actual sugar,” he said. “We just change it from a liquid form to a crystallized form, and then we sell it to you.”

He added that using natural sugar could be part of a broader movement toward healthier consumption habits. “Maybe that's what's driving this,” he said.

Roth also shared a lighthearted joke often used in the industry: “When sugar farmers are talking to corn farmers, we remind them that sugar is for people and corn is for cars.”

Economic Impacts and National Security

Palm Beach County Commissioner Sara Baxter supported President Trump’s initiative, calling it a positive step for farmers and the local economy. She described sugar cane growers as essential to national security, noting that food production is a critical part of daily life.

Baxter also expressed confidence in the decision-making of the president’s advisors, including nutritionists and dieticians. She believed that the shift to real cane sugar could bring additional economic growth to the area, which already relies heavily on agriculture and tourism.

Coca-Cola’s Response and Ongoing Developments

As of Thursday afternoon, Coca-Cola had not confirmed the agreement. Instead, the company released a statement on its website, thanking President Trump for his enthusiasm for the brand and promising to share more details about new product offerings soon.

This story is still developing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available. For the latest news, readers can check WPBF 25 News for ongoing coverage.
