Mom Faces Unforeseen Consequences After Choosing Termination at 20 Weeks

A Mother's Journey Through Uncertainty and Triumph
When Kristina learned that her son had a cleft lip, she was faced with a decision that would change the course of her life. The news came during a 20-week anatomy scan, where doctors identified the condition and suggested the possibility of a cleft palate. This moment marked the beginning of an emotional journey that tested her strength, resilience, and love for her child.
Kristina shared her story on Instagram, using the handle @benjiwithacleft, to highlight the challenges she and her family faced. Her initial reaction was one of sadness and disbelief. "My first instinct was to cry—and I did," she said. "It felt like everything I had imagined for my baby suddenly changed, and I wasn't prepared for that kind of news."
A cleft lip occurs when the upper lip doesn’t form completely during early pregnancy, sometimes extending into the palate. It is one of the most common birth defects, affecting about one in 1,600 babies in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For Kristina, the diagnosis brought confusion and uncertainty, as she struggled to understand what the condition meant for her son’s future.
Doctors were unable to provide clear information about the severity of the cleft or any potential complications. "I also think the medical team was required to present all possible options, even though I wish the conversation had been worded with more sensitivity," she explained. "It was already an emotional time, and hearing that so bluntly made it even harder."
After Benji was born, feeding became a significant challenge. He needed a nasogastric (NG) tube for a month just to get proper nutrition. Before his first birthday, Benji underwent two major cleft surgeries. The recovery process was difficult, especially after his palate repair, which required two separate hospital stays.
One of the most painful moments came when Benji refused all milk for five to six weeks. "It was heartbreaking to see him struggle like that," Kristina said. "So when he finally drank milk again, it was a huge 'Hallelujah' moment for us."
Despite the challenges, Kristina didn’t expect to grieve her son’s first smile—the one they had come to love so deeply. "That part was unexpectedly emotional," she said. "But we are so fortunate and truly blessed to have experienced and loved both of Benji's smiles—his beautiful pre-surgery smile and the one he has now. Each one tells a part of his story, and both are just as special to us."
From being given the option to terminate her pregnancy to today, nothing could have prepared Kristina for what her son’s life actually looks like. Benji is thriving. His palate has healed, his speech is improving, and he's now a curious, joyful toddler who loves to eat and smile.
"Most of all, he's still as smiley and happy as ever," Kristina said. "It's amazing to see how far he's come, and we're so proud of him."
