An inquest into the death of a 23-year-old woman who refused chemotherapy for her treatable non-Hodgkin lymphoma has revealed troubling details about family dynamics and medical decisions. Paloma Shemirani, a Cambridge graduate and former Miss Brighton finalist, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2023. Despite a positive prognosis that indicated an 80% chance of survival, she declined conventional treatment and ultimately passed away just seven months after her diagnosis. Her story highlights the complex interplay between personal beliefs, family pressure, and medical care.

The Role of Family Influence

Paloma’s mother, Kate Shemirani, is known for her strong anti-vaccine stance and has been associated with alternative health practices. She was previously removed from the UK nursing register due to her views on medicine, including discouraging the use of masks and vaccines during the pandemic. According to the inquest, Paloma was reportedly influenced by her mother's beliefs, which led her to refuse chemotherapy.

A nurse specializing in teenage and adult care arranged a follow-up meeting with Paloma after noticing unusual family circumstances and interference with her treatment. However, Paloma self-discharged before the meeting could take place. Despite this, she later requested her mother to be her next of kin again.

Dr. Mohan, a haematology consultant, detailed the treatment plan for Paloma, which included six cycles of chemotherapy, steroids, and potential radiotherapy. She noted that Paloma initially agreed to the treatment but later changed her mind, exploring unconventional options instead. Dr. Mohan expressed surprise at the sudden shift in Paloma’s decision and stated that she had not expected her to completely reject treatment.

Paloma’s mother is a proponent of Gerson therapy, an alternative approach that includes a strict diet, natural juices, coffee enemas, and supplements. Paloma followed this regimen at the time of her death. She suffered a cardiac arrest at her mother’s house and later died when life support was withdrawn at a hospital in Brighton.

Her brothers, Gabriel and Sebastian, have since spoken out, claiming that Paloma was pressured by her mother to reject conventional treatment.
