Kate Beckinsale Shares Heartbreaking Moment of Her Mom's Passing

A Heartfelt Tribute to a Beloved Mother
Kate Beckinsale, the acclaimed actress known for her role in the Underworld series, recently shared an emotional social media post announcing the passing of her mother, Judy Loe. At 78, Judy had been battling cancer for a long time, and her death left Kate deeply affected. In the post, she expressed that she was "paralyzed" with grief, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The 51-year-old actress posted a carousel of photos capturing different moments from Judy's life, including images from her early career as an actress. These memories served as a touching tribute to the woman who was not only her mother but also her guiding force and closest friend.
A Painful Announcement
In her caption, Kate explained that she didn’t want to post about her mother’s passing but felt compelled to do so because she had to register the death certificate, which would soon become public. She described how Judy passed away in her arms on the night of July 15th after enduring immense suffering.
“I have not picked all the best photos, nor the best videos, because I cannot bear to go through my camera roll yet,” she wrote. “I deeply apologize to any of her friends who are finding out this way or through the press, but I cannot go through her phone. I am paralyzed.”
Judy was more than just a mother; she was the compass of Kate’s life, the love of her life, and her dearest friend. Her kindness and warmth touched many people, and her absence has left a void that seems impossible to fill.
The Last Moments
The world feels darker without her, and Kate struggled to find the words to express her sorrow. She ended her post with a heart-wrenching message: “Oh my Mama.. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.” These simple words conveyed the depth of her pain and love for her mother.
Judy had been diagnosed with stage four cancer in July 2024, just months after the passing of her husband, Roy Battersby. Throughout her life, she was a respected actress, appearing in projects such as Edward the Seventh, General Hospital, and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
A Final Act of Love
Just a week before her passing, Kate shared an emotional video from her hospital bed, singing “Bye Bye Love” by the Everly Brothers to her ailing mother. In a lengthy caption, she explained the significance of the song, noting that Judy still had so much love to give.
Kate recounted how her mother, at just 14 years old, was part of a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia (known as Fuzzy due to an unfortunate perm), and Chris. Even in their late 70s, they remained close, and their friendship was a testament to Judy’s deep capacity for love and connection.
“I am a very poor substitute not being a very good singer, but I want my mom's dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her,” she said. “I love you both and how much support and love you are sending, and it is a mark of my mother's extraordinary capacity for love and deep respect for relationship history that her friendships with her early school friends are still so very current.”
She ended her message with a heartfelt apology to anyone in the hospital who had to endure her singing, adding, “Love you all but most especially my mom. X.”
A Legacy of Love
Kate’s father, Richard Beckinsale, was also an actor who passed away when she was just five years old. He died of a heart attack at the age of 31, leaving a lasting impact on the British public. In 2021, Kate reflected on the intensity of those early years, sharing her feelings with Howard Stern.
Her journey through grief is a reminder of the strength it takes to carry the weight of loss, especially when it involves someone as central to your life as a parent. As the world mourns the passing of Judy Loe, her legacy lives on through the love and memories she leaves behind.
