John Legend and Son Miles Enjoy Heartwarming Dad-Bonding at Diabetes Camp

John Legend Shares Heartfelt Memories from Diabetes Family Camp with His Son
John Legend, the acclaimed singer and EGOT winner, recently shared a special moment with his 7-year-old son, Miles, during a trip to a diabetes family camp. The event took place at DYF (Diabetes Youth Foundation), where families of children with type 1 diabetes come together for support, education, and bonding. In a series of photos posted on Instagram, Legend captured moments of joy and connection with Miles, including hiking through the forest, relaxing in their cabin, and posing in front of towering trees.
In his caption, Legend expressed gratitude for the experience, writing, “I took Miles on a boys’ trip to a wonderful diabetes family camp. Loved having one-on-one time with him at Yosemite. And it was so cool for him to be around a bunch of kids his age and counselors with diabetes. I learned a lot and I’m so grateful to everyone involved.”
The trip provided an opportunity for Miles to connect with other children who face similar challenges, while also allowing Legend to deepen his relationship with his son. It’s clear that this time spent together meant a great deal to both of them.
A Journey of Discovery and Adjustment
Miles was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year, and the news came as a surprise to the family. Chrissy Teigen, John Legend’s wife, shared the story of how they discovered the diagnosis. She explained that Miles had been hospitalized for shigella, a bacterial infection, and during routine blood tests, doctors noticed something unusual. This led to further testing, which confirmed that Miles was in the “honeymoon period” of type 1 diabetes—a phase where the body still produces some insulin but will eventually need external management.
Teigen described the emotional impact of the news, highlighting the overwhelming support from the online community after she shared a photo of Miles with his diabetes monitor. “So many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform,” she wrote. “You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible.”
After the diagnosis, the family began adjusting to a new normal. Legend spoke about how the experience has strengthened their family bond. “As soon as I learned that he had this, I knew it was going to be life-changing for him and for us, but I'm also like, 'We can do this.' We've got great advice and lots of support to help us learn.”
Learning and Growing Together
At the time of the diagnosis, Miles was still in the early stages of managing his condition. Legend explained that his body was still able to produce some insulin, but as the disease progresses, more careful monitoring and management would be required. “We just have to be more aware,” he added, noting that the family would need to track carbohydrates, administer insulin before meals, and stay vigilant about his health.
Despite the challenges, the Legend family remains optimistic and committed to supporting each other through this journey. Their resilience and teamwork have become a source of strength, not only for them but also for others facing similar situations.
A Supportive Community
The experience has also highlighted the importance of community and support. From medical professionals to fellow parents, the Legend family has found comfort in knowing they are not alone. As they continue to navigate life with Miles’s condition, they remain focused on building a future filled with love, understanding, and hope.
