A Journey of Transformation and Empowerment

Denise, a 54-year-old businesswoman, has always been driven. Married to Glenn, a 55-year-old engineer, the couple lives in Los Angeles and has no children. Like many others during the pandemic, they found solace in food and wine. Glenn perfected his pizza dough, while Denise enjoyed pouring glasses of wine each night. However, this comfort came at a cost. In just a few months, she gained over 15 pounds, reaching a weight of 13 stone 7 pounds. At 5 feet 11 inches tall, she was bursting out of her size 18 clothes, which was far from slim.

The physical changes were not the only issue. By her late 40s, Denise began experiencing health problems that made her realize something needed to change. She had already been told by doctors to lose weight because she was prediabetic, and she was newly diagnosed with arthritis in both knees. The diagnosis shocked her, as she thought knee replacements were for people in their 70s. But it wasn’t the health issues that truly hit home—it was when she noticed her wedding ring was too tight for her fingers. That moment made everything real. She realized she was doing harm to herself and knew it was time for a change.

She took a hard look at her diet and realized how much carbohydrates she consumed, mostly from Glenn’s homemade pizzas, but how little protein she actually ate. The nightly wine was also full of empty calories. Her 30s and 40s were spent building up her executive recruiting company, working long hours, and trying every diet under the sun—WeightWatchers, the Atkins diet, the Six Week Body Makeover, and even Jane Fonda videos. While these methods worked temporarily, the weight always returned, leading to a cycle of yo-yo dieting for three decades.

In August 2020, she decided to try a different approach. She started following women on social media who were lifting weights and talking about “macros.” Though she didn’t know what a macro was at first, she learned quickly. Tracking macros helped her focus on the right balance of protein, fats, and carbs. Unlike calorie counting, this method emphasized muscle growth. She aimed for 25-30 grams of protein per meal, incorporating foods like oats with egg whites, ground turkey tacos, and spaghetti squash with tomato sauce and lean meat. She also reintroduced meat into her diet, which she hadn’t eaten for years, as she felt her iron levels were low due to menopause.

Her new eating habits did not come without challenges. Glenn was supportive, but he preferred eating later in the evening, which clashed with her new routine. They ended up eating separately, which was tough since dinner used to be their main way of connecting. Instead, they switched to evening walks. With gyms closed during the pandemic, she bought cheap weights online and started lifting in her guest bedroom. Initially, the workouts took two hours because she was out of shape, but she kept going.

Within weeks, things began to shift. She became quicker at completing workouts and added 30 minutes of cardio five days a week. As she got stronger, her body and mindset changed. Her goal was to reach a size 12 for her 50th birthday in October 2020, and she succeeded. She celebrated with a small party, feeling incredible and noticing improvements in her arthritis and energy levels. For the first time in years, she liked how she looked and felt.

Glenn, inspired by her transformation, hired a coach and started tracking macros too. Now, they go to the gym together, sharing a meaningful experience. The change went beyond physical fitness; it reshaped how Denise viewed her life. She started an Instagram account in 2021 to connect with other women, and the response was overwhelming. Women in midlife reached out saying they saw themselves in her—feeling stuck, tired, and believing their best days were behind them. She wanted to show them that midlife could be a new beginning.

In 2023, she handed over her company to her business partner and launched a coaching platform called Rebellion Body, aiming to inspire women over 40. She believes muscle is the fountain of youth, improving metabolism, protecting joints, boosting confidence, and helping sleep. It’s not about looking a certain way, but feeling strong and capable.

At 55, she competed in a bodybuilding competition, lifts heavy weights, and even noticed improvements in her sex life. Midlife, she says, is a gift—offering experience, perspective, and more time and resources than in their 30s. The only limit is the belief that it’s too late.

Denise wants women to keep dreaming big, no matter their age. She still wants to get more muscular, particularly bigger glutes, and is excited about the future. Her wedding ring now fits perfectly again, proving that aging is a choice based on mindset, not menopause.
