"Daddy Strolls" Go Viral in Chicago as Fathers Share Life's Ups and Downs

A New Movement for Dads
In today's world, more fathers are actively involved in their children's lives than ever before. They take on significant nurturing and caregiving roles, yet many parenting resources still overlook them. This gap has led to the creation of the Daddy Victory Club, a supportive community founded by Kouri Marshall, a Chicago dad who recognized the need for a space where fathers could share their experiences, challenges, and advice.
The Origin of the Daddy Victory Club
Marshall noticed that his wife had access to numerous resources during her pregnancy and after the birth of their child, while he often felt left out of the conversation. "From utero to throughout the pregnancy, through delivery, I noticed that she had a lot of resources available to her," he explained. "The doctors would often just talk to her and sometimes not to me, and I'd be like, 'Hey, I'm here.'"
After speaking with friends, Marshall realized he wasn't alone in feeling this way. He searched online for resources but found very little. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world,” Marshall decided to create something himself. He started the Daddy Victory Club in Chicago, aiming to support other dads in their journey.
A Safe Space for Fathers
The Daddy Victory Club provides a safe environment for men to navigate the challenges of fatherhood. Cameron Barnes, a member of the group, shared how it helped him adjust to his new role. "Everything was very complex for me," he said. "Trying to figure out my new schedule, dealing with the changes of babies, and figuring out how to pour into myself as well. I asked the other dads in the group how they did it. Their tips helped me schedule my days and make sure I found time for myself so I could give my best self to my wife and son."
For Marshall, a "Daddy Victory" is not always about grand achievements. It can be as simple as potty training his son or helping his wife rest when their child was a newborn. These small victories, he believes, are what truly define a successful father.
Monthly Gatherings and Community Impact
Once a month, the Daddy Victory Club holds "Daddy Strolls," which have gained attention on social media. A video of dads and strollers walking together went viral, catching the eye of Tomas House, who decided to join the group. "Being a proud dad, that was a no-brainer for me," House said. "I wanted to take the light of Black dads to a higher level and also highlight my Black son."
While the group was initially created with Black fathers in mind, Marshall emphasizes that it is open to all dads and father figures. "This is a group for Black dads, but we're not exclusive," he said. "There are white brothers here in Chicago and across the country with biracial children. It's also for dads of children of color. We hope they'll join us with the intention of being good dads."
Joining the Movement
The next Daddy Victory Walk is scheduled for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. All dads are encouraged to attend and bring their children. The event will take place in the South Loop at The Spoke and Bird. Whether you're a new dad or a seasoned parent, this is an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences, and celebrate the victories of fatherhood.
By creating a space where fathers can come together, the Daddy Victory Club is helping to redefine what it means to be a present and involved dad. It's a movement that highlights the importance of support, community, and shared experiences in the journey of parenthood.
