Bea was born healthy in 2021, but her health took a sudden turn when she fell ill at just 15 months old. At first, Terry and his partner Cheryl believed it might be something minor, like the common cold or even Covid-19. They had recently returned from a vacation to Florida, where both Cheryl and their other daughter had contracted the virus. When Bea started showing symptoms such as breathlessness and lethargy, they assumed she might have also caught the illness.

To help manage her condition, Bea was fitted with a Hickman line, a type of catheter used to administer medication. Initially, the family was told that she was doing well, but things took a dramatic turn when they arrived at the hospital. Terry recalls hearing alarms and frantic shouts from medical staff, which made him realize something was wrong.

The medical team worked quickly to stabilize Bea, performing CPR after she went into cardiac arrest. Doctors warned the family that if she had another episode, she might not survive the night. The only hope for her survival was to be placed on an urgent transplant list. To prepare for this, Bea needed a Berlin heart, an artificial heart device that helps keep patients alive while they wait for a donor.
