Al Roker and Daughter Leila Judge on 'Family Recipe Showdown'

A Taste of Family and Competition on “Family Recipe Showdown”
The latest episode of Food Network’s “Family Recipe Showdown” delivered a heartfelt blend of culinary creativity, family traditions, and friendly competition. Contestants from three different teams showcased their unique takes on classic recipes, all while vying for the grand prize of $10,000.
The episode kicked off with three teams: Mamaw Gail and her grandson Ethan, sisters-in-law Antoinette and Pamela, and sisters Haley and Rachel. Each team was tasked with creating their own version of a Southern classic — biscuits. The judges for this round were Octavia Spencer and Edgar “Dook” Chase.
Haley and Rachel began by discussing their plan to make buttermilk biscuits, just like their grandmother used to. “Biscuits are in our genes,” Haley said. Their dish, paired with tomato gravy, impressed the judges. Meanwhile, Mamaw Gail and Ethan brought their goulash and biscuits, which ultimately won the first challenge.
Antoinette and Pamela, however, faced some criticism for their biscuits not rising properly. As a result, they were sent home after the first round.
A Special Guest Appearance
The second challenge brought a special guest to the kitchen — Al Roker, along with his daughter Leila. Their presence excited the contestants, with Ethan exclaiming, “Al Roker walks through the door — like, America’s weatherman!”
Al shared how cooking has always been a big part of his family’s life. “When we were growing up, my mother, my grandmother all cooking, but they didn’t write anything down,” he said. He then introduced the next challenge: each team had to reimagine two of his and Leila’s favorite family desserts.
Al offered up his famous baked apple crisp, while Leila suggested her lemon meringue pie. Since Mamaw Gail and Ethan had won the first challenge, they got to choose which recipe to revamp. They opted for the apple crisp, much to Al’s delight.
Haley and Rachel took on the lemon meringue pie, turning it into a parfait that represented their family memories. They included sweet-tea infused lemon custard and a gingersnap layer, adding a personal touch to the traditional dessert.
Mamaw Gail and Ethan worked on their own version of the apple crisp, creating an apple cobbler with whipped cream. During the hour-long challenge, the judges checked in on the contestants, hearing their stories and motivations. Ethan spoke about how his grandmother lives in a single-wide trailer, while Haley and Rachel emphasized their family’s long history of cooking.
Judging the Final Dishes
When it came time to present their dishes, Mamaw Gail and Ethan showcased their apple cobbler crisp. Al joked that they should call it a “crobbler,” and praised the simple yet nostalgic presentation. He loved the lightness of the dough and the balance of the whipped cream. Dook also appreciated the crispiness of the topping, calling it “blown away.”
Haley and Rachel presented their parfaits, with Dook praising the lemon custard and Leila noting the perfect amount of gingersnap throughout. Despite their confidence, Rachel admitted she was still nervous.
After tasting both dishes, the judges announced that Mamaw Gail and Ethan had won the second challenge. The pair was overjoyed, hugging each other and expressing their excitement at winning $10,000.
A Winning Moment
When asked what they would do with the prize money, Mamaw Gail expressed her desire to replace her 2004 vehicle, which she had driven for years. Ethan added that it was a meaningful moment for him as well.
Octavia Spencer concluded the episode by saying that the pair had earned both the prize and the judges’ affection. She encouraged everyone to embrace the moment, leading to a heartwarming group hug.
When asked about their future plans, Ethan mentioned working on a cookbook, while Mamaw Gail simply said she wanted to return home to cook Sunday dinner.
This episode of “Family Recipe Showdown” highlighted the power of family, tradition, and the joy of cooking. It was a celebration of heritage, talent, and the bonds that connect generations through food.
